We’re on a roll lately with reviewing a bunch of MOTI devices and today we’re lucky enough to have in our grasp MOTI’s pre-production MOTI X to test and review. As this device is not available in the shops, the physical packaging and user manual couldn’t be supplied as it doesn’t exist yet.

MOTI were kind enough to forward us an electronic copy of the user manual and packaging contents so we could capture the main specifications and what will be supplied in the kit. I may struggle to catch every detail about it but will do my best to convey as much information as possible.

There is very little known about this new MOTI X; I call it new because MOTI released a product back in 2020 with the same name… confusing or what!

However, I can say MOTI have just released to market a MOTI X Mini and looking at the form factor between the two, they both use the same pod. From this I can only assume the MOTI X will be the big brother, with more functionality than the MOTI X Mini.

MOTI are really exploding into the pod mod market following their recent collaboration with Vaporesso. The outcome resulting in some outstanding new devices being released making MOTI now one of the up and coming major players in the vaping industry.

We have just completed our reviews of the MOTI X Mini and the MOTI Play so feel free to check these out. Anyway onto the matter in hand, welcome to our review of the MOTI X Pod Mod Kit.

Overview of the MOTI X

The MOTI X pod mod has a variable wattage power level between 5W to 40W and is powered by an internal rechargeable 2000mAh capacity battery. Variable airflow control is carried out by rotating the pod in the MOTI X battery/body to provide different styles of vaping (coil dependent) such as Mouth-To-Lung (MTL), Restricted-Direct-To-Lung (RDL) and Direct-To-Lung (DTL).

Two different types of pod are available; prefilled closed pods which we saw when reviewing the MOTI X Mini or open pods that accept the replaceable X coils and are refillable. We understand the MOTI X kit includes the open pod with a single X coil.

Maximum wattage is dependent on the type/resistance of the fitted coil while its optimum wattage level is auto selected using coil detection. This can easily be overridden by the wattage adjustment buttons or you can use the 4 pre-set variable power curve settings.

Charging the MOTI X is carried out via the Type-C USB fast charging port, specified as 5V/2.0A, on the bottom front of the device body just below the two + and – wattage adjustment buttons.

A 0.96inch OLED dual-color display screen on the front face of the MOTI X shows all of the operating parameters and control functions including wattage, coil resistance, voltage, puff counter, vape time, battery level and the 4 pre-set variable power curves.

Made out of Zinc Alloy and PC, the MOTI X maintains a lightweight feel but doesn’t compromize on quality. Two different color devices are available; Galaxy Silver (shown in the photos within this review) and Gunmetal Grey.

What’s in the Box?

Not an easy one this, we didn’t have the box or kit contents! Because we only received the MOTI X device and an open pod with a 0.7 ohm X coil included, we cannot with any certainty specify what the contents of the kit will be.

We have discussed this with MOTI and received information from them stating what the kit contents will be so have documented this below:

As you can see, the kit contents include a pre-installed replaceable X35 coil. Unfortunately we can’t comment on the performance of this coil because we received the X70 (0.7 ohm) coil. Equally, when we reviewed the MOTI X Mini, that didn’t include a replaceable X35 coil and pod so we couldn’t verify its performance during that review either.

However, the pre-filled pods that we received and reviewed in the MOTI X Mini do contain an integrated non replaceable 0.35 ohm coil but we can’t say with any certainty that there two coils will be the same.

MOTI X Design and Appearance

MOTI X Battery/Body

The MOTI X pod mod is a variable wattage (5W-40W) device, although the maximum wattage is dependent on the type (resistance) of coil that’s fitted in the pod. A maximum power level is automatically set for the particular coil it detects and can’t be increased beyond this level. There is also the option of selecting 4 pre-set variable power curves.

Firing the MOTI X is done by the large square fire button, it’s NOT draw activated. Two wide cyclops type fixed airflow slots in the pod recess provide variable airflow by rotating the pod when it’s fitted. An internal rechargeable 2000mAh capacity battery provides all day vaping from a single charge.

Charging the battery is carried out using the supplied USB to Type-C charging cable via the Type-C port, which is specified as 5V/2A, positioned on the front of the MOTI X body. The display indicates a real time status of the battery during use and while it’s being charged.

It will take approximately 60 minutes to fully charge the device and the status of the charge is displayed on the OLED display (see How do I Charge the MOTI X) for further clarity. Pass-through vaping is present so you can vape while it’s being charged.

The zinc alloy construction makes this a reasonably lightweight and robust pod mod, but it is heavy enough to give it a quality feel. Apart from the top and front frame of the MOTI X, the sides, bottom and curved back are manufactured using a polycarbonate semi-transparent smoked black material. This encases the internal battery which is slightly visible together with the electronic circuitry of the control board.

The overall measurements of the MOTI X body are 85.5mm tall (excluding the pod), 34mm wide by 26.5mm deep and it weighs in at 104 grams (113.6 grams including the pod).

A 0.96 inch OLED dual color display screen is embedded below a full length black faceplate on the front edge of the MOTI X body/battery. It’s positioned below the 10mm square fire button and above the 7.7mm circular + and – wattage control buttons.

There is a slight button rattle when shaken but all buttons do have a positive click feel to them.

All of the following User Interface (UI) data is clearly displayed on the screen which illuminates during vaping and remains visible for approximately 1 minute after any button is pressed:

The appearance of the UI information is virtually identical to that on the MOTI Play device, which we recently reviewed, the exception being the Power Level, Ohm/Volt headings and numerical Puff value are colored white, all of the remaining information is displayed in orange.

This display is clearly visible through the black semi-smoked opaque screen faceplate cover. The main display parameters are fairly large so are easily viewed in all but direct sunlight. However, the vaping time reading is a little small.

Variable wattage is carried out by the two circular shaped + and – adjustment buttons which are colored amber. Each press of either button will increment or decrease the wattage in 0.5W steps. Holding the button down will scroll through the wattage levels faster. There is a “Round Robin” on either button so once it reaches its maximum or minimum value; the next press goes back to the opposite value.

Maximum wattage is dependent on the type of coil that’s fitted. The MOTI X will auto recognize the coil and set the optimum wattage for that coil. From there, you can manually adjust the wattage between the minimum and maximum specified for each coil:

• 0.35 ohm Coil (X35) – 5W to 40W
• 0.70 ohm Coil (X70) – 5W to 16W

Multiple vaping styles can be achieved by using either of the two different coils available or when using the prefilled closed pod disposable pods by the rotation of the pod in the MOTI X body. As I’ve only received the 0.7ohm coil and the prefilled disposable pod which uses an integrated non replaceable 0.35 ohm coil/pod, the style of vaping ranges from a DTL draw through to an airy MTL draw.

The top of the MOTI X has a deep (18mm) circular pod recess with an inner metal ring that connects with the magnets on the bottom of the pod. Within this ring are two gold plated, spring loaded coil contact pins that sit within a black isolated strip that align with the bottom of the X coils. The dual cyclops slots are also positioned in this recess casing on each side that align with the bottom side edges of the coil.

MOTI’s branding is quite large but not overpowering. All of the branding is kept within the smoked opaque sides and reverse area with their name “MOTI”, and “X” on the reverse battery casing. The name of the device “MOTI X” printed on one side and “2000mAh”, “Made In China” and the usual “CE” markings screen printed on the other side.

With regards to safety features, the on-board chip provides the following prompts such as:

• 10 seconds timeout (vape cut-off)
• Low battery voltage
• Over-charge protection
• No coil/pod detected
• Short circuit protection
• Low resistance protection

There are currently only 2 colors available in the MOTI X Pod Kit range; Galaxy Silver (shown in the photos within this review) and Gunmetal Grey. I’m not sure if there are any plans in the future to release additional colors in the range, time will tell!

Overall, the MOTI X feels solid, robust and very well built. It’s compact, very comfortable to hold, performs really well and in my opinion is another great pod kit that cements MOTI as an up and coming player in the pod mod vaping industry.

MOTI X Pod

Before I start, the MOTI X accepts a disposable prefilled closed pod system which I won’t discuss as we’ve covered these in our MOTI X Mini review. Instead we will focus on the open pod system which is refillable and accepts MOTI’s push fit replaceable X coils. In the above photos, the “Open” pod is shown on the left and the “Closed” prefilled pod is on the right.

The MOTI X pod is refillable via a bottom fill port concealed behind a black silicone rubber flap and stopper, has a 4ml (2ml TPD) e-liquid capacity, accepts replaceable push fit MOTI X coils and is constructed out of clear PCTG material.

Its dimensions are 40.7mm tall by 22mm in diameter with an integrated fixed round 11mm mouthpiece. The weight of the pod including the coil is 113.5 grams.

Two outstanding points for me are that MOTI have opted to use a clear PCTG material instead of the usual smoked tinted type so you can clearly see the e-liquid level. The second point is the thickness of the silicone rubber stopper and the ease that it can be swivelled around to aid filling with e-liquid.

The MOTI X pods bottom fill port is concealed behind a flush fitting black silicone rubber plug. To gain access to the fill port, the pod has to be removed from the MOTI X body. This plug has a fingernail slot on its side edge to aid unplugging the stopper.

When the plug/stopper is opened, the other end of the silicone rubber flap will remain attached to the pod by a small circular pin so it won’t get misplaced. It does resemble one of the circular magnets but it’s not magnetic. It’s easily swivelled around giving greater access to the fill port. This e-liquid fill port is also a pretty decent size oval opening measuring around 5.5mm so is big enough to accept short stubby e-liquid tip bottles.

On the underside of the pod are three small round magnets that sit flush with the base of the pod that attach to the outer circular magnet in the MOTI X body pod recess providing a secure fit.

The pod accepts the MOTI X range of push fit replaceable coils. Two O-Rings on the coil; one on the top end of the coil that fits into the bottom chimney section in the pod and one on the base of the coil that seals against the coil opening in the base of the pod.

When fitting the coil, do ensure you line up the top of the coil to the bottom of the chimney in the pod so it easily slides into the chimney opening. The coil is inserted correctly when the base of the coil sits flush with the base of the pod.

You will notice there are two side cut-outs opposite each other in the base of the pod, these are the two airflow channels that align to the dual cyclops slots in the pod recess of the MOTI X body.

Branding on the pod is limited to a “Min” e-liquid line on one side of the pod chamber and the CE markings printed just below this line.

Inserting the pod is straightforward enough, simply place the pod to the MOTI X body opening and it will slide into the recess and be locked and held in place by the magnets. When the pod is connected, the display will briefly indicate “Atomizer In”.

Removing the pod is carried out by applying light pressure to the pod body and pulling away from the MOTI X body/battery. As the pod is removed, the display will indicate “Atomizer Out”.

MOTI X Functionality

---

The MOTI X is a simple to use straightforward variable wattage device (5W-40W) with no complicated menu structures to worry about. BUT it does have a detailed 0.96 inch OLED dual color display which shows all of the set parameters.

It also has 4 pre-set variable power curves if you want to select these rather than worrying about setting your own wattage levels (images shown under pre-set power curves heading).

Changes to these parameters and operating of the MOTI X are carried out by sequential presses of the fire button and the wattage + and – buttons as follows:

• Fire button pressed 5 times turns the device on or off
• Fire button pressed 3 times will Lock/Unlock the fire button
• Fire button pressed will fire the device
• + button will increment the wattage in 0.5W steps
• – button will decrease the wattage in 0.5W steps
• Fire and + button pressed together will Lock/Unlock the + / – buttons
• Fire and – button pressed together will reset the Puff Counter
• + and – buttons pressed together with switch between the main display and the 4 pre-set power curves display

Included on the 0.96 inch display is all of the read-out information as follows:

• Wattage Buttons Lock/Unlock

Also the safety read-outs for the protection of the MOTI X are:

• Time Over:- 10 seconds vape cut-off
• Bat Low:- Low battery (<3.3V)
• No Atomizer:- No coil/pod detected
• Ohms Too Low:- Short circuit and low resistance cut-off

Wattage Adjustment

When first inserting a new coil, the MOTI X will automatically select the optimum power level for the type of coil you’ve fitted. Varying the wattage level above or below this setting is carried out by using either the + or – buttons to increase or decrease the power level.

The MOTI X will limit the available maximum power level obtainable for each coil:

• 0.35 ohm Coil (X35) – 5W to 40W
• 0.70 ohm Coil (X70) – 5W to 16W

Pressing either of the + / – buttons will alter the power level in 0.5W steps. Holding the button down will scroll through the power levels faster. The buttons do round robin so once the power level has reached its maximum, pressing the + button will switch the power level to the minimum value. Equally, the – button will operate the same.

Fire Button / Wattage Buttons Lock/Unlock

In the bottom right hand corner is a padlock icon with the loop of the padlock open. This highlights that both the Fire button and Wattage buttons (+/-) are not locked and will operate as normal.

Pressing the Fire button 3 times will lock the fire button and change the padlock icon to locked with a “P” symbol inside the padlock icon. Each time you then press the fire button, the display will indicate “Power Locked”.

Unlocking the fire button is carried out by pressing the fire button 3 times in quick succession and the padlock icon will unlock.

Holding the Fire button and + button together will lock the + and – buttons and change the padlock icon to locked with a “W” symbol inside the padlock icon. Each time you then press either of the + /- buttons the display will indicate “Wattage Locked”.

Unlocking the +/- buttons is carried out by holding the fire button and + button together and the padlock icon will unlock.

Puff Counter Reset

Each time you draw on the MOTI X, the puff counter will increment by 1. You can use this counter to gauge how many puff you do in any given time.

Holding the fire button and – button together will bring up a “Clear Puff”, “Yes or “No” menu. While this menu is displayed, press the + button and it will reset the puff counter to zero.

Vaping Time Reading

The small “Time” reading just above the numerical wattage level indicates how long you draw on the pod. It will display a numerical value in seconds and fractions of a second, resetting each time to take another draw. Strangely enough, there is also a minute reading but will never reach this because the vape time will cut off after 10 seconds.

I believe this is a generic reading which we saw on the MOTI Play. That display accumulated its reading which didn’t reset after each draw but combined your total vape time until you manually reset it.

Pre-Set Power Curves

The 4 pre-set power curves can be accessed by pressing the + and – buttons together. The main display will switch to a vertical bar chart graphical display with 4 “Flame” type icons. Pressing the + or – button will scroll through the 4 different pre-set options.

Each flame symbol that’s highlighted corresponds to an increase in power.

Automatic Coil Recognition:

When a new coil is fitted in the pod, the MOTI X automatically detects the type of coil and selects the optimum wattage for that coil. Adjustment of the wattage above or below this optimum value is still possible by the +/- buttons if you want to fine tune your wattage.

There are currently two different resistance coils for the MOTI X; a 0.7 ohm (X70) and a 0.35 ohm (X35). The maximum wattage that’s available for the 0.7 ohm coil is 16W and 40W for the 0.35 ohm coil

Airflow:

The MOTI X provides variable airflow control by rotating the pod within the pod recess. You can open or close the airflow by aligning the side cut-outs in the pod with the dual cyclops slots in the casing of the MOTI X.

MOTI X Performance

---

As we’ve mentioned earlier, we received the closed prefilled disposable pods and an open pod with an X70 coil. Our review on the MOTI X Mini details the closed prefilled flavor pods so I will cover the open pod in this review.

As always, prime your coils before using them which will help prolong their life. Drip a few drops of e-liquid into the wicking ports of the coil and then fill the pod and leave to stand for 10-15 minutes. Take a few draws with the wattage set to low and slowly increment the wattage up, each time taking a few more draws until you reach your desired wattage setting.

While the auto coil detection is a very handy feature, I do always prefer to slowly bed my new coil in starting at a wattage level below the minimum recommended. If you’ve primed the coil first and once filled left it to soak into the wick for 10-15 minutes, it won’t hurt the coil if you prefer to use the recommended settings straight away. I’m a creature of habit and have always done this to help prolong the usable life of my coils.

0.7 ohm Mesh Coil (X70)

MOTI specify the minimum and maximum wattage range for this coil is 10W-16W. When the auto power select activates the power level is set to 14W.

As with most pods, I elected to use a 50/50 e-liquid with my standard 6mg freebase nicotine so not to stress the wicking ports.

After my initial priming and setting the power level to the minimum the MOTI X goes down to (5W), I took my first few draws to bed the coil in. Even at this power level it fired and the flavor of my e-liquid came through with a small amount of vapor.

Increasing the wattage to 8W took the performance to another level. The flavor was strong and crisp, I was getting a good throat hit and the coil was producing pretty dense vapor. Taking the power level to the minimum recommended of 10W just further enhanced the performance.

At both the auto selected 14W and the maximum 16W that the MOTI X can deliver, the strength of flavor and vapor was really good. I did try a 70VG/30PG e-liquid through the pod and had no issues with dry hit, the coil and wicking ports keep up really well.

My ideal wattage with this coil was a mere 8W which was plenty enough to enjoy a really nice vape and obviously to conserve the battery power. I didn’t get any gurgling or spitting from the mouthpiece and the draw was pretty quiet.

Any Leaks?

Throughout my time using the MOTI X there were no leaks. Each time I refilled the pod I did observe condensation around the bottom of the coil and against the side casing where the pod sits. This wasn’t excessive but I would recommend wiping this away each time you fill the pod so it doesn’t build up.

In my experience I would recommend removing the pod from the device body if you don’t use the MOTI X for any period of time so e-liquid seepage doesn’t cause any malfunction on the pod mod.

Airflow

Airflow adjustment was good and did alter the tightness of the draw. For you folk that like a very tight MTL style, you may struggle to achieve this. I found with the airflow closed I was getting an airy MTL draw. The rotation of the pod worked well but I did at times move the pod without realizing the airflow would change. It’s not the easiest to see what the airflow is set to but in all honesty it did work.

Performance Summary

I was very impressed with the performance of the coil and the pod. Flavor, throat hit and vapor were all very good, the draw was smooth and wasn’t’ too loud. At this low level of power, the e-liquid lasted really well.

Being able to see my e-liquid level through the clear pod was a great advantage.

MOTI X Battery Performance

---

The MOTI X’s 2000mAh internal battery capacity is way more than enough to provide a whole day’s vaping. On average I was achieving around 14 hours of vaping time on a single charge. Considering the compact size of the device, the battery capacity is really good.

My puff count on average recorded over 600 draws with my wattage level set to 8W.

Battery performance is always subjective and depends on the power you vape at, your vaping style and of course the type of coil that’s fitted.

The battery level icon in the top right hand corner of the display gives an accurate reading of the remaining charge left in the battery. As the charge diminishes the number of bars in the icon reduces. Once the battery is depleted of its charge, a “Low Power” prompt will appear on the screen and you will no longer be able to vape. At this point the MOTI X will require charging.

Pass-through vaping is enabled on the device so you can vape while it’s being charged. This function won’t operate when first placed on charge; you will have to wait for a few minutes until the ‘Low Power’ prompt doesn’t illuminate when the fire button is pressed.

How do I Fill the MOTI X Pod?

---

The MOTI X pod is a bottom fill design. You’ll have to remove the pod from the MOTI X body in order to fill with e-liquid. Remove the pod and you will see the fill port located and concealed behind a black silicon rubber flap. This flap sits flush with the bottom surface of the pod.

A small fingernail slot on the side of the pod above the rubber flap will aid the flap to be lifted open. This silicone rubber flap is quite thick so there shouldn’t be any problems with it splitting or getting broken. It’s attached to the pod body by a small circular metal plate so there’s no chance of it getting lost.

Pull open the flap and insert your e-liquid bottle tip into the oval opening. The rubber flap will swivel around out of the way of the fill port giving more access to the hole. The filling port is approximately 6mm wide so does accept those larger stubby e-liquid tip bottles.

Once your pod is filled with e-liquid, re-insert the silicon rubber flap making sure the fill port is securely re-seated. Re-insert the pod into the MOTI X body until it’s held in place by the magnetic catches and the main screen displays “Atomizer In”.

Do ensure you don’t let the e-liquid level run down too low before you top up the pod. There is a minimum e-liquid mark on the side of the pod but this is hidden when the pod if fitted. Because the pod is clear, it’s easy to see the level of e-liquid remaining in the pod. The main thing to keep an eye on is NOT letting the e-liquid level fall below the wicking ports on the coil.

Quick Tip: If you are filling the pod for the first time, once filled, leave to stand for approx. 10-15 minutes before you start to vape. This will help saturate the wick fully in e-liquid and help prolong the life of the coil/pod.

How do I Change the Coil in the MOTI X Pod?

If the coil in your pod is showing signs of failing with a loss of flavor or vapor, or worst case either the e-liquid tastes burnt or the MOTI X indicates a short circuit, then it’s time to change your coil.

The pod will have to be removed from the MOTI X body first to gain access to the bottom of the pod. When you remove the pod the MOTI X screen will display “Atomizer Out”.

Once the pod has been detached, simply pull the coil out from the bottom of the pod. If you have e-liquid in the pod, turn the pod upside down and place your thumb or finger over the mouthpiece before you remove the coil. This will help keep e-liquid spillages to a minimum.

Fitting a new coil is straightforward. Slowly push your new coil into the opening in the base of the pod and press it fully home. Make sure the top of the coil sits in the chimney housing below the mouthpiece. The base of the coil will sit flush with the base of the pod.

Do ensure that your new coil is primed by dripping a few drops of e-liquid in the wicking ports. Fill the pod with your e-liquid and leave to stand for 15 minutes so the e-liquid fully saturates the wick. See our guide on Prolonging the Life of your Coil.

When refitting the pod to the MOTI X, the main display screen will indicate “Atomizer In” highlighting the pod is fitted correctly.

I also recommend when first vaping on a new coil, lower the wattage and take a few draws to pull e-liquid through the coil. Slowly increase the wattage, each time taking a few draws until you reach your desired wattage setting. This will help in improving the longevity of your coil.

How do I Charge the MOTI X?

Because the MOTI X has an internal battery, charging is carried out using the supplied USB to Type-C charging cable. Simply connect the cable into the Type-C port on the front of the MOTI X body and the other end into a suitable USB power source. The specified charging circuit of the MOTI X is 5V/2A.

When the MOTI X is placed on charge, the small battery icon in the top right hand corner of the main display will start to incrementally cycle. After approximately 10 seconds the display screen will change to a larger single battery icon with scrolling bars counting upwards.

The battery icon will continually scroll from 1 bar to 5 bars during the charging process. As the charge increases, each one of the lower bars in turn will remain static until the 5th uppermost bar stops flashing. The color of these bars will change color from Red – Yellow – Green – White during the charging cycle to give a visual indication that the charge is increasing in the battery.

When full charge is achieved after approximately 60 minutes (1 hour), the display will show 5 white static bars for a few seconds (20 seconds) and then the large battery icon will extinguish. At this point remove the power source as full charge has been completed.

I timed the charge cycle from “Low Power” (0%) to 100% charge and it took 53 minutes which for a 2000mAh capacity battery is really quick. I’ve included my timings below which highlights the time it took at each color change.

The MOTI X does include pass-through allowing you to charge and vape at the same time. However, when the battery is completely depleted and then first placed on charge, pass-through doesn’t work. Once the device has enough charge to not bring up the “Low Voltage” prompt when the fire button is pressed, pass-through will work.

While the MOTI X is being charged, it does get slightly warm to the touch. I would recommend to ONLY charge the device on a non-flammable surface.

As with any vape device, NEVER leave it unattended whilst charging.

The MOTI X pod kit is a great vape device and the performance from the pod and coil are very good. Unfortunately at the time of writing this review the MOTI X isn’t commercially available so we can’t comment on the price.

MOTI have really pulled out all the stops with this one.

The styling, function and performance of this pod kit are terrific. Not only does it have a totally clear pod, it’s refillable, has replaceable coils and produces great flavor and vapor. If you don’t want to fiddle with e-liquid or replaceable coils, there is the option of using prefilled flavored pods.

Not only that, MOTI have included 4 preset power curves so if you don’t want to fiddle with adjustable wattage levels, simply switch to the pre-set levels and away you go.

The pod mod itself has an informative display, good battery performance with a very big 2000mAh capacity battery. 40W top end is not by any means big but it doesn’t need any more. There’s plenty of power to produce great results from the coil.

This is the second MOTI kit that I’ve personally reviewed in the last couple of weeks and it really is light years ahead from the earlier MOTI devices I reviewed a year or so ago. I would certainly recommend this to any vaper.
